Emergency Electrician: electrical equipment and assessment
NEXT STEP

What this means for your property

Note the affected rooms, whether lights and sockets behave differently, and any recent changes. Do not open the consumer unit or accessories.

What an assessment can establish

Loss of power, a hot socket and a burning smell need different responses. The first discussion establishes whether anyone is in danger, what is affected and whether the fault is still present. Making the affected circuit safe may be a separate stage from finding and completing a permanent repair.

When the issue needs assessment, our emergency electrician page describes the scope and preparation for that work.

Information to have ready

Call with your postcode and a description from a safe position. Do not open equipment or repeatedly reset a returning fault.

Apply this guidance to the next step

Use the appointment process to agree access and the purpose of the visit. For another question about the same system, read Why Does My RCD Keep Tripping?.

Do not remove covers or touch exposed electrical parts. If there is smoke, fire or an immediate danger to life, move away and contact the appropriate emergency service.

Further information

General guidance cannot establish the condition of your installation. Arrange an appropriate assessment before deciding on work.
