Consumer Units & Fuse Boxes: electrical equipment and assessment
NEXT STEP

What this means for your property

Send the exact appliance model before delivery. Ask about circuit capacity, protection, isolation and installation access.

What an assessment can establish

Replacing a consumer unit does not renew the cables throughout a property. Existing circuits, earthing and bonding need assessment so the replacement can be selected and connected appropriately. Older faults can become apparent during this work and should be explained before extra repairs are agreed.

When the issue needs assessment, our consumer units & fuse boxes page describes the scope and preparation for that work.

Information to have ready

Send a safe photograph of the closed board and labels, plus any EICR. Do not remove its cover.

Apply this guidance to the next step

Use the appointment process to agree access and the purpose of the visit. For another question about the same system, read When Should a Consumer Unit Be Replaced?.

Do not remove covers or touch exposed electrical parts. If there is smoke, fire or an immediate danger to life, move away and contact the appropriate emergency service.

Further information

General guidance cannot establish the condition of your installation. Arrange an appropriate assessment before deciding on work.
